Dr. John here to answer your questions! “I start Social Security at age 62 can I start my Medicare as well?”

Unfortunately, Medicare starts at age 65 for most individuals. So if you're 62 years old and collecting Social Security you still have to wait until age 65 in order to qualify for Medicare.

There are some unique circumstances where somebody under 65 can be on Medicare:

  1. Disability: if you've been on disability for 24 months then you can qualify for Medicare

  2. End stage renal disease essentially kidney failure and need dialysis then Medicare can start for you underage 65

  3. ALS or Lou Gehrig's aside from that Medicare starts at age 65 regardless of when you collect Social Security.

Although it seems to make perfect sense to start Social Security and Medicare at the same time, you have to wait until 65 for Medicare.
