What to Know About Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

Beginning Monday, October 17, 2022, millions of Americans with hearing loss can purchase hearing aids over the counter.

Should you or someone you love be hard of hearing, this brief Q&A will be important to keep in mind as you consider your needs, now and in the future.

Here is the latest on the announcement and what it may mean for you.

Where are OTC hearing aids available for purchase?

Beginning on October 17, 2022, hearing aid users can purchase FDA-certified hearing aids from any major retailer like Amazon, Walmart, or Best Buy without a prescription.

What types of hearing aids are available?

Over-the-counter aids are restricted to air-conduction hearing aids (both behind and in-ear). In addition, the wearer must be able to adjust the volume, and the amplification level must be limited to prevent accidental ear damage.

How much will OTC hearing aids cost?

Barbara Kelley, executive director of the Hearing Loss Association of America, predicts OTC hearing aids will cost $300-500 per device—far less than the average cost of $2,000-7,000.

Remember, there is no hearing aid coverage through Medicare Parts A or B. Private insurance may have coverage limits, so be sure to check your individual policy.

What should I look for in an OTC hearing aid? Are they FDA-approved?

While you may see hearing aids for as low as $100 at some retailers, these haven’t likely been put through any major medical trials or tests. To ensure a device has been through the FDA clearance process, check whether it appears in official FDA databases.

Will I need an audiologist if I can purchase aids OTC?

While the FDA has removed the exam and prescription requirement, it’s always wise to see an audiologist if you’re experiencing hearing loss. An audiologist will be able to guide an OTC search, recommend products given your degree of hearing loss, and help you adjust your devices after purchase.
